"Positive reinforcement is so vital, and you should give praise whenever a desired behavior is displayed," says Diane Geis, vice president of human resources at Altercare Ohio.
Introduced in early 2001 as a part of its recognition and motivational program (RAMP), the treasure chest appreciation concept recognizes employees for acts as simple as taking an extra shift or keeping cool when dealing with an upset customer. Through the program, supervisors and managers can immediately acknowledge employees by dipping into the treasure chest for a gift.
The reward system works to bolster performance and self-confidence by recognizing employees in front of their peers, Geis says.
Each year, TSG Resources funnels $500,000 into RAMP, a portion of which supports this treasure chest. "But not just the treasure chest - that would be a lot of lunches, wouldn't it? Geis laughs.
