Atlantic Sun assistant commissioner Devlin Pierce, whose 11-school league invites eight teams to its tournament, says his conference doesn't embrace the prospect of being represented by a losing team at the NCAA Tournament.

"Thirty-two different scenarios, it's not hard to do that, you could have 32 scenarios every year," assistant commissioner Devlin Pierce said."But when those scenarios go into tiebreakers so deep, it takes three times longer. We had teams going into ones with teams not involved anymore. It was close to having to flip."
Although the possibility looked good, there was some debate late Thursday whether the Gamecocks would get in at all.But even in the worst case scenario of a three-way tie for seventh, they make it by virtue of their two victories over the other two teams involved (compared to only one for Belmont).

Sometime early this morning, Atlantic Sun assistant commissioners Devlin Pierce and Ted Gumbart are going to find a back office at the A-Sun headquarters, put on two pots of coffee and begin what has become the arduous process of trying to figure this conference race out.
"It's fun to do," said Pierce, the conference's first-year director of championships and media relations."It would be a lot easier if there was a clear-cut one.It makes it tough when you're doing a tiebreaker when you have potentially a six-team tiebreaker against everyone else.
"It's fun when you realize how close it is.It means it's a competitive league. It means the tournament will be good."
Of course there are a lot of other combinations of wins and losses that can affect the upper part of the standings, but that's what they pay Pierce and Gumbart the big bucks for.
