Songhai Press - A Unique Publishing Company

Songhai Press was founded in 1992 by author and publisher, Derrick Gantt.
Motivated by the alarming lack of diversity and cultural relevance of texts made available to early readers and young people, Mr. Gantt sought to provide a new source of life-affirming, fun-to-read, educational books for children in order to welcome them into the world of learning and literacy. Mr. Gantt's own dream and determination has grown with increasing breadth and success through focused efforts and the energetic support of community and professional partners.

Derrick Gantt, author and publisher, is changing the face of children's literature.
A native Philadelphian, Gantt launched SONGHAI PRESS CORPORATION. In less than ten years, his "baby project" has grown into a corporate powerhouse - attracting the attention of learning institutions and a growing list of sponsors. Currently, thousands of children and families are enjoying his publications such as, "Hey Pop-Pop! "Eboni and the Dinosaur" and "The Storyteller" Books I & II. Since 1996, the School District of Philadelphia has purchased a copy of Gantt's publication, "My First Week of School" for each family with children entering kindergarten in the district. In addition to Gantt's publications, he has developed literacy and writing programs for children and families such as "Raising Readers" a workshop designed to help parents make literacy a centerpiece in the home, and "The Young Publisher's Program" to help children write, edit, illustrate and publish books. Course: Methods Lab Practicum (creative writing); Institute 2002-2007

"The best part of the program was the way Mr. Gantt was able to motivate the students and develop their creative thoughts."
Becoming an author and presiding over his own publishing house was not exactly a childhood dream for Songhai Press president, Derrick Gantt. Quite the contrary, as a child, Mr. Gantt's primary goal was staying alive on the streets of South Philadelphia where he witnessed many of his peers fall victim to drugs, early incarceration, and untimely deaths. Frequent fights with childhood foes and neighborhood bullies kept Mr. Gantt, the seventh of twelve children in his family, out of gangs. In addition, an early love for reading and a supportive mother taught Mr. Gantt that independence and resourcefulness are the keys to success. These were also the "keys" that led Mr. Gantt to eventually launch Songhai Press Corporation. Author and publisher, Derrick Gantt, shares his compelling life story with students, grades fourth through ninth, in this engaging one-hour presentation. The Songhai Press Author's Presentation program allows students to get up close and personal with an inspiring author as he covers topics such as African History, creative writing as a form of selfexpression, publishing, the entrepreneurial experience, and the importance of culturally relevant stories. This interactive presentation highlights the events that inspired Mr. Gantt to create his own publishing company, which specializes in culturally relevant literacy experiences for children, teachers, and families. The Songhai Press Author's Presentation challenges students by educating them about the untold legacies of African and African American history, culture, heritage, and perspective.

AB Day Students Write A Book Press Release by Michael Kleiner PR & Web Design

The book was published by Songhai Press Corporation, founded in 1992 by Derrick Gantt, who was the students' writing coach.
Songhai Press "is dedicated to providing innovative strategies that foster children's and family literacy both in the classroom and at home…by providing a new source of life-affirming, fun-to-read, educational books for children." "It was a challenge and took a lot of effort for 24 students to come together and agree on a book," said Gantt. "The parents showed a high level of commitment, volunteering their time to help out. Too often there are negative stories reported about minority kids. Today is a positive story." "It was a challenge and took a lot of effort for 24 students to come together and agree on a book," said Gantt.
