Derek Maltz, a high recruited lacrosse player, will play for the Syracuse Orange in the spring of 2011. His father also played his lacrosse career there...
And Derek Maltz, a highly touted lacrosse player in the area, committed to the Syracuse Orange, one of the biggest powerhouses for lacrosse in the country.
Derek Maltz - Boys' Lacrosse - Syracuse
Maltz has been one of the most highly anticipated lacrosse recruits to ever come out of the Northern Region. A standout player on the Bulldogs' varsity squad since his freshman season, Maltz has clearly shown that he is ready to take his game to the next level at Syracuse University, which is also his father's alma mater.
"This is just absolutely incredible," said Maltz. "I just hope to be able to contribute in any way the coaches there need me to."
The Orange are certainly excited to have Maltz, who boasts numerous accolades. He has been a captain for the Bulldogs since his freshman season. Last year, he was named first team All-District and All-Region.
Maltz not only hopes to excel on the field, but in the classroom as well. A sports enthusiast, he plans to major in broadcast journalism at Syracuse.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Redshirt junior Hakeem Lecky (Nantucket, Mass) and seniors Matt Harris (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), Derek Maltz (Ashburn, Va.) and Billy Ward (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) have been named captains for the 2014 season, head coach John Desko announced on Thursday, Oct. 10.
Maltz will serve as a captain for the second year in a row, while the others will be in the role for the first time.
Like Harris, Maltz earned All-Big East honors in 2013. He was second on the team with 32 goals, and netted the game-winner off a rebound with 19.2 seconds left in the NCAA semifinals versus Denver to propel SU to the national championship game. Maltz has 79 points, including 63 goals, in his Orange career.

Chris Daddio, a junior midfielder at Loudoun Valley High School, and Derek Maltz, a Stone Bridge junior attacker, have committed to play for Syracuse University, a program that claimed its 10th national championship in May, the most in Division 1 lacrosse history.
Maltz, an All-Northern Region selection, was honored with his team's Most Valuable Player award after racking up 33 goals and 21 assists in his sophomore campaign.
The Bulldogs' captain says the Syracuse coaches like his offensive skills.
"I can finish in the crease, and they saw my shot from the wing," he said.
Representing Loudoun
Daddio and Maltz are among a growing number of Loudoun players garnering high-profile looks.
"I think it's going to be huge," said Maltz about the future of lacrosse in Loudoun.
"It's a tradition," Maltz's father, Derek, said with a thick accent.
The Maltzes relocated to Loudoun County in 1999, when Derek was 7. After a hiatus in New Jersey from 2002 to 2005, the family returned to Loudoun.
"When we came back, I noticed that the talent out here had really increased dramatically," said Maltz, a lacrosse enthusiast who easily rattles off the names of players who have ascended to the college level. "The sport was developing nicely."
Being seen
Getting in front of college coaches means playing lacrosse year-round. The opportunities to display skills in tournaments like the Nike Blue Chip Camp or the Vail (Colo.) Lacrosse Shootout are afforded to players like Daddio and Maltz by playing with elite travel squads: Ashburn-based Madlax for Daddio; Stone Ridge-based Blackwolf Lacrosse and the Loudoun FuZe for Maltz. "It's more finesse, stick skills, moving the ball," said Maltz, as Daddio nodded in agreement.
For both Daddio and Maltz, being in families with lacrosse heritages has helped guide their courses. Before Maltz's father played for the Orangemen, his uncle played at the University of New Haven.
Success breeds success, the elder Maltz says: "I believe that because of kids like Chris and Derek and Garrett [Swankowski of Loudoun Valley], and [local players] Tim Sanders and Will Field and Eric Madigan, these kids are now going to attract the coaches.
Mr. Maltz recognized Swankowski's raw talent while watching him play with Derek and Chris on the Loudoun All-Stars in 2006.
"As soon as I saw that kid play, I knew he was going to be a Division I player," Maltz said.
Like Daddio and Maltz, Swankowski would welcome a chance to play professionally.
