A mechanical engineer by training, Derek graduated from The University of Sheffield in the mid 1960s and joined Imperial Chemical Industries as a Graduate Apprentice.
Following three years of experience in junior roles, in different locations, on different products and different functions; he
became involved in development, project and maintenance engineering finishing as a Product Senior Engineer with responsibilities for all plant engineering activties in the mid 1980s.
Then followed a period as a Works Engineer with both multinational and privately owned organisations in biscuit and bread manufacture until the end of the 1980s.
Six years of engineering and general management in the pulp and paper industry followed.
Since 1995 Derek
has been involved in health, safety and environmental management.
Qualifying through Loughborough University's
Post Graduate Health and Safety Management and the NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management.
Derek is also a Certificated LRQA Internal QMS Auditor.
Experience of the responsibility for the 'Licenses to Operate' in health, safety, environment and quality for a large paper board included contact with regulatory organisations i.e. EA and HSE and with the mill's Quality Auditors.
As well as Membership of IOSH and a Registered Safety Practitioner, Derek remains a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the I Mech E.
