Dr. Watson , a founding member of the Oncostasis , Inc Science Advisory Board , has been Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Senior Scientist in the Center for Molecular and Structural Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina since 1993.After receiving his PhD in 1980 from the Johns Hopkins University in Cell Biology & Biochemistry , Dr. Watson spent 12 years at the National Cancer Institute ( NCI ) as a leading member of the Laboratory of Molecular Oncology ( LMO ).While at the NCI/LMO , Dr. Watson was one of the discoverers of the Ets gene family , and was directly responsible for the isolation and characterization of Ets gene products.He determined the role played by several Ets genes in important biological pathways including cellular proliferation , differentiation , and in the etiology of cancer.In addition to continuing to evaluate the role of specific Ets genes in cellular transformation , Dr. Watson has been responsible for the identification and functional characterization of genes with altered expression during progression of pancreatic , prostate and lung cancer ( including mesothelioma ).His research has demonstrated the functional significance of altered gene expression , and he continues to identify potentially novel therapeutic modalities.Dr. Watson has a strong reputation in the field of Molecular Oncology and has published over 125 scientific articles.He is also the inventor of four issued or pending US patents.
