Mike returned in 1988 to help coach the state championship football team under Dennis Vaught.

Dennis Vaught was a graduate assistant coach at Virginia Tech 1985-86 and worked as an assistant coach (tight ends) under Frank Beamer during his first spring in 1987. He came to LHS in the summer of 1987. His second team in 1988 finished 11-3 and won the Group A Division 2 state championship. He left LHS to coach football at Patrick Henry-Roanoke and then went to Richlands High School, where he coached until 1997, winning the Group AA Division 4 state championship in 1992. Dennis currently lives in Abingdon where he has an insurance and investment business.

Vaught, who left a sales job to become a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech, first was a high school coach at Lexington where one of his assistants was current Tech offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring.

Vaught then came to Roanoke as the head coach at Patrick Henry, but resigned midway through the 1989 season after making a racial slur about an opposing player at halftime.
Vaught later made headlines at Richlands, admitting that he outfitted his team in illegal cleats during a 1992 Division 4 semifinal victory over Salem. He was suspended from coaching for one season by the Tazewell County School Board. Vaught returned to Richlands as head coach in 1995 for a short tenure.
