Mr. Eklof is senior director of Asia Pacific Energy at Cambridge Energy Research Associates. This article is adapted from a speech he delivered at the May 12 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation's Energy Minister's Conference in San Diego, California.
Asian economies and the countries of the Middle East that provide the fuel for Asia's growth are being forced to take a fresh look at the diplomatic and commercial relationships that have shaped the notion of energy security for nearly three decades. The conflicts that inevitably will arise from Asia's burgeoning appetite for oil will not be resolved through military conflict, diplomatic confrontation or government-to-government pacts.Rather, they will be resolved through the free market.
As the old economy gives way to a new model of truly global competition, it's clear that many of the prescriptions for ensuring energy security that were cemented during the shortages of the 1970s are now obsolete.Asian countries are moving away from the traditional notion that governments, not companies, must ensure secure supplies of energy and other critical resources.
