John Hale | Next Step Consulting

Many years ago, I had lunch with former Coles Myer CEO Dennis Eck, when he was first appointed to the role. Dennis shared with me that in the first few weeks in his new role, the pristine set of Coles Myer Corporate Values that resided on a plaque on the CEO's desk were not reflected in the culture. Dennis had the plaque moved to the wall of his office and when his executive team asked him where the plaque had gone, he pointed to the wall. Dennis shared that when the culture embodied, in a real way, its core values, the plaque would return to the desk.

Dennis understood the importance of strong core values and sticking to them.
