Dennis joined the board after serving regularly in St. Anthony's Dining Room, where he grew to love the culture of dignity, respect and kindness. He currently serves as chair of the St. Anthony Board's Nominating and Governance Committee, and as the Board Chair of the North Country School/Camp Treetops in Lake Placid, New York. From 2001 - 2006, Dennis was the founding Board Chair of Oak Hill, a school in Marin for children with autism and other developmentally-based learning challenges.
Dennis spent most of his professional career as the Chief Assistant City Attorney in San Francisco, after previous work as a federal prosecutor. He has argued cases of constitutional significance in the Supreme Courts of the United States and of California. In 1998, he was named one of California's 20 "lawyers of the year" for his successful defense of San Francisco's Equal Benefits Ordinance in suits brought by Pat Robertson's legal foundation and United Airlines.
Dennis is a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School, and was a Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow at Harvard in 1996.

Dennis Aftergut Dennis Aftergut is the father of two young adults with learning challenges. Dennis was a founder and Board Chair of Oak Hill School in Marin County, which serves children with developmental differences. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Board of North Country School and Camp Treetops in Lake Placid, New York, where his daughter attended. He is also the Governance Chair of the Board of the St. Anthony's Foundation, which provides work training, medical care, meals and counseling to men and women in San Francisco's Tenderloin. Dennis joined the PEN Board in 2010.
In a prior life, Dennis was a federal prosecutor and the Chief Assistant City Attorney in San Francisco. Dennis has argued cases of constitutional significance in the California and United States Supreme Courts. In 1998, he was named one of California’s 20 “lawyers of the year†for his successful defense of suits brought by Pat Robertson’s legal foundation and United Airlines challenging San Francisco’s nondiscrimination law protecting the economic rights of domestic partners.
Dennis is a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School, and was a Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow at Harvard in 1996.
