Denise Eichmann: Biography

Denise Eichmann

Denise, who joined Ambius in 1990, is a Certified Landscape Professional (CLP) whose newest area of expertise focuses on the design, construction and installation of vertical gardens and living walls. Denise works collaboratively with architectural teams for conceptual planning and design, feasibility, and construction documents and implementation. In conjunction with Boston architects, Wilson Butler Associates and the Waterfield Design Group, Denise and her development team brought Central Park to life aboard Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas. This first ever "gardens at sea' landscape work on Oasis of the Seas was the recipient of three Awards of Excellence citations and Calscape's prestigious Judge's Award for the most outstanding overall project in 2010. Denise and her team were recognized for bringing the best of land to sea with the Oasis of the Seas' Central Park initiative, which showcases a revolutionary design where the center of the ship opens to the sky and features lush, tropical grounds. This public gathering place features serene pathways, seasonal flower gardens and canopy trees, and provides guests with more choices in unique outdoor spaces. Denise is active in the design and construction of sustainable vertical gardens, also known as green walls and living walls. Stemming from the successful completion of several large green wall projects, Denise was hired to install the largest living wall in North America at Longwood Gardens, one of the world's great gardens located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. "The green walls at Longwood Gardens can clean upwards of 15,500 lbs. of dust and harmful toxins from the air," says Denise. "Green walls dramatically improve energy efficiency by moderating indoor air temperatures and humidity levels. Other marquee engagements include the Smithsonian Institute, where Denise and her team provided and installed prestigious plantings at the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. The courtyard was designed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners architectural firm, who worked with Kathryn Gustafson of Gustafson Guthrie Nichols Ltd., to transform the 28,000 square feet of exterior space into an interior garden. Eichmann was responsible for the sourcing and purchase of the plantings as well as the coordination and logistics of moving 35-foot high Ficus trees, sixteen black olive trees, thousands of understory plantings, soil and drainage through a 12 x 12 opening in the glass canopy. Earlier projects include the landscaping of exhibits in zoological parks and aquaria; atria in conservatories; historic buildings; universities; hospitals and research facilities; high end resorts and world class hotels; regional shopping centers; corporate headquarters, airports and casinos. Denise earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany from Kent State University. Denise was certified by PLANET as a Landscape Professional in 1995 and has been recertified bi-annually via education and service credits. Connect with Denise

Heights of Fancy | Green Walls | Ambius

People love to touch the foliage, Eichmann says. In addition, the leaf space of 50 square feet of vertical garden "provides oxygen equivalent to a 14-foot tree," Eichmann says. She adds that some cities require that a certain amount of landscaping be set aside with any building project, and vertical gardens satisfy the requirements within a small footprint. (That small footprint also makes them attractive for condo balconies, townhomes with minimal to no yards, and to lend grandeur to modest entryways.) Pothos and philodendron need little light indoors (Eichmann calls them "closet plants"). Eichmann says you should consult a structural engineer to be sure. Ambius, which does only commercial installations, says its hydroponic systems range from about $150 to $200 per square foot installed, with bigger walls having a lower per-square-foot cost because you can use one large irrigation controller to operate the entire system of multiple irrigation zones, Eichmann says. Riverside Medical Center Unveils Green Roof | Ambius

"This living roof encourages a different way of thinking altogether. Installing green roofs is about ensuring a commitment to address the most pressing environmental issues of our time - climate change, energy efficiency and sustainability." "Living roofs were commonly found on the sod houses of the American prairie but in recent decades, architects, builders and city planners have turned to green roofs for their beauty and practicality," adds Eichmann.
