Federal grants to aide communities

"We are absolutely ecstatic about being funded," said Denise Colangelo, executive director of the Port Chester Council for the Arts, which will receive a total of $75,000 over the next three years to provide children with scholarships for its after-school program."It is so important in our community that children have a safe, protected place where they can go after school."

The grant money, which is awarded in three-year cycles, comes from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.Earmarked to help people with low and moderate incomes, competition for the grants is always stiff. Many projects do not receive funds and those that do usually get less than asked for by applicants.
