In 2007, Dr. Deborah Tuzo, Orthodontic Surgeon and Coordinator of AHEAD-Bermuda established a partnership between these three entities to establish this life enhancing program which identifies patients in need a facial reconstructive surgery to correct the disfigurement caused by congenital cleft palates and cleft lips.
With this construct, we have established a mechanism where the patients and their families could be brought to Dar es Salam from remote villages under the sponsorship of AHEAD, to undergoing this dramatic and necessary surgical intervention.
Dr. Tuzo has found this partnership to be "an extraordinary experience, where by working together, we are able to witness firsthand, the dramatic improvements that our work accomplishes in the lives of these patients and their families.
She recognizes that the team approach and partnership between AHEAD and the magnificent doctors and nurses at the CCBRT made our program a profound success.
In 2008, AHEAD
was able to significantly expand this program to the repair of 20 cleft palates and lips, in addition to the repair of multiple skin wounds and the resection of multiple tumors.

Dental Surgeon and Orthodontist, Dr. Deborah Tuzo, Director of AHEAD Bermuda, will be leading a team of 10 volunteers on another trip to Tanzania this July, the purpose of which is to assist young Tanzanians to become more self sufficient.

Masters in public health developed an interest in international health.In 2001 she
accepted an invitation from the Williams to work with the AHEAD
programme for the summer. "It was an awesome and inspirational trip that motivated me to try to do as much as possible for Tanzanians in rural areas," she
said of her
first trip to Tanzania when she
noticed they had limited access to basic health care and clean water. The achievements of AHEAD Bermuda
in Tanzania include hospital ward renovation, providing educational scholarships for Tanzanian high school students, working in dental education, AIDS prevention, education in primary and secondary schools and much more.The AHEAD Bermuda
volunteers go to Tanzania every two years to do charity work. . Led by Dr. Tuzo
,19 Bermudian volunteers went in 2004 and worked in various fields including, medical, dental, education and construction.

Update on AHEAD: Tanzania July 2009 - www.aheadinc.org
In October of 2009, the AHEAD Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Dental Surgery Team, organized by AHEAD Board Member, Debbie Tuzo, DDS, MPH, will again put their surgical talents and expertise in manifest for the people of Tanzania.
Currently, nurses and phyisicans in various regions of the Tanzanian countryside are identifying children and young adults with surgical dilemmas requiring this teams talents and expertise.
This facinating and extremely gratifying program, the brainchild of Dr. Debbie Tuzo and her colleague, renowned Plastic Surgeon Dr. Christopher Johnson, has grown exponentially from its inception two summers ago, dramatically helping scores of families in need of critical reconstructive surgeries.
