Deborah Tumulty was reassigned from her job as the Revenue Department's hiring chief because she wouldn't participate in Blagojevich's plan to hire friends and supporters "to enrich or provide political support for Blagojevich," according to the lawsuit filed in Sangamon County Circuit Court.
Tumulty says she was then told she would be fired or could resign, which she involuntarily did in February 2008. Tumulty was the Department of Revenue's personnel director from February 2004 until she was moved to labor relations in June 2006, about the time she began cooperating with the FBI, according to the lawsuit. She claimed she repeatedly refused to falsify documents, manipulate the interview process or otherwise sidestep a U.S. Supreme Court ruling prohibiting the consideration of politics in most state hiring decisions. Tumulty claims the defendants violated state laws protecting whistleblowers and barring retaliatory firing and seeks reinstatement, double back pay, interest on back pay, attorneys fees and other damages.
