Deb Carlen, owner of Five Ideas, a Sonoma communications consultancy, will conduct the workshops as a volunteer instructor.
Carlen has years of experience in the disciplines offered, and had her first byline published in The Atlanta Journal at age 15. "We're going to move fast from basic concepts right into article writing, creating press releases, understanding 'why people buy stuff,' through marketing basics, and producing publication design based on strong graphic principles. I also hope to encourage students who have been drawing - or doodling - for awhile to learn how to use their art in publications and logos." Carlen is also bringing opportunities for getting into print to the workshops, and with Sonoma Valley Teen Services Executive Director Cristin Lawrence, has set up potential outlets for teens to function as professionals in editorial and advertising efforts in the community and online.

Deborah Carlen1st Vice President Deborah CarlenDeborah Carlen is originally from Atlanta, earned a Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia, and completed post-graduate work in western European medieval history (into each life a little useless information falls), marketing, and advertising. She has published articles and features since age 16, which was a very long time ago, and taught college courses in marketing, creative writing, and speculative fiction in three states. Her professional career includes owning an ad agency in Atlanta, a director-level position with a national non-profit medical advocacy in Washington, and six years "on the road" in the United States and Canada teaching intense seminars as well as creative director assignments in publishing and marketing. She may be the only Board member who has consulted inside the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia.Deb moved to Sonoma County in 1999 from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and owns a tiny marketing and business development firm. With strong roots in community volunteerism, she brings a different perspective to the Board: a Southern accent, a family with a rich heritage of multiple ethnicities and belief systems, and a strong personal commitment to unaffiliated Jews in Sonoma County.
