was born and raised on a small family dairy farm in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, about 3 and ½ hours from Cedar Rapids.He joined the U.S. Coast Guard immediately after graduating from high school.After 8 years of enlisted service Dean was selected to attend Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an officer in June of 1974.
In maritime terminology he
"came up through the hawse pipe."Dean
has spent the last 26 years in the Coast Guard Marine Safety Program primarily as a marine inspector, investigations officer, and port operations officer [pollution response].In 1974 Dean
was assigned to Marine Safety Office [MSO] Galveston, Texas as Commanding Officer, Captain of the Port [COTP], and Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection [OCMI].In 1997, after being promoted to Captain, he was assigned as the Coast Guard Liaison to the American Bureau of Shipping [ABS] in Houston.Dean
and Linda, his
wife of 24 years, have two children, Ashley, 19 and Byron, 17.Linda and the children are currently living in League City Texas [between Houston and Galveston].Ashley will be attending Rhodes College
in Memphis, TN this fall, and Byron will be a junior at Clear Creek High School
.After working with the Coast Guard in regulating the marine industry, Dean is looking forward to using his knowledge and expertise to enhance the company goals and objectives of operating our ships in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
Dean's responsibilities will include coordination of the ISM and training functions of the company.
