Dean moved across the country when he matriculated at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000, and moved back East for a rotating internship in medicine and surgery at the veterinary school in Virginia. He completed a three year residency in small animal surgery and received his MS in veterinary sciences. Dean remained there as a clinical instructor before returning to the Bay Area. After working for several years at a specialty hospital in the East Bay, Dean was asked to create the surgical branch of Veterinary Specialty Services in Fresno. Building on these experiences, Dean formed West Coast Veterinary Surgical. Since then, he has become the primary surgeon at several hospitals and emergency clinics in the Bay Area. Dr. Filipowicz is published in several veterinary journals, has co-authored book chapters, and has spoken at a number of conventions and symposiums. His masters research investigated an emerging type of orthopedic fixation which has since become the gold standard in human orthopedics. Dean's special interests include fracture management, sports medicine, oncologic and reconstructive surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. Dean is the head of United's nascent surgery department, and is eager to become part of your patients' management team Dr. Filipowicz is leading the specialty medicine side of United and will do what is necessary to ensure that any possible growing pains don't adversely impact the exceptional care that you've come to expect from United Veterinary Specialty & Emergency. He will maintain an established ambulatory service as well as be available for in-house, mobile, and phone consultations. When not at work, Dean can be found enjoying all outdoor physical activities that the area has to offer, especially if they involve water or mountains.
