Former Deutsche Exec Sets Up Hedge Fund

BOSTON (Reuters) - Dean Barr, who last year left a job as chief investment officer at Deutsche Asset Management, (XETRA:DBKGn.DE - News), has launched a hedge fund and joined a long list of well-connected Wall Street veterans battling to manage a chunk of the $600 billion industry. ADVERTISEMENT> > > Until August, Barr helped raise and manage roughly $800 billion at the German bank's money management unit. Now Barr has brought in millions for his own fund, Thunder Bay Capital Management. And he is on track to meet his $200 million investment goal for his first fund, according to sources familiar with the matter. The New York-based fund has started to trade, using computer models to buy and sell stocks. Barr, who is attending an industry conference in Florida, could not be reached for comment.A spokesman for the fund declined to comment. During his 20-year career, Barr,42, earned a reputation for breaking new ground. For example, he found ways for big pension funds to tailor their asset mix to meet retirement payouts. A MONEY MAGNET Raising the amount of money investors say Barr has in hand and in commitments to his fund is no small feat at a time investors are rethinking their commitment to these loosely regulated funds that promise to make money even in falling markets. Barr, who earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley and holds a patent for stock selection, joins luminaries like former Morgan Stanley strategist Barton Biggs, who set up his own fund this year. People familiar with Barr's operation said several former colleagues have joined him. Before coming to Deutsche Bank, Barr worked at State Street Corp. "We will be interested to talk with Dean Barr and hear his story," one potential investor said. Email this story - Set a News Alert ADVERTISEMENT Special Offers ·
