(Whittier Daily News/Staff Photo by Keith Durflinger) LA HABRA >> When it comes to a teaching philosophy, Dawn Aandahl likes to quote Aristotle. Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all, she quotes one of the 4th century B.C. philosophers well-known sayings. In the classroom with first- and second-graders, that in part translates into touching her students emotions, making them feel good about themselves, helping them feel secure and safe in the classroom, and sharing the pride they have in their intellectual leaps and bounds. I believe you have to reach a student emotionally as well as intellectually, because if they dont trust you, theyre not going to listen a lot, she said. Aandahl, who teaches at Macy Elementary School in La Habra, in August was named the 3,100-student Lowell Joint School Districts 2013-14 Teacher of the Year. She began teaching 15 years ago after a career that included a variety of pursuits, such as working as a secretary at a law firm, running a typing business, data entry for a catalog company, working at a nursing home and a stint as a teachers aide at Neil Armstrong Elementary in Diamond Bar, which inspired her to become a teacher. Tall and fair-skinned with an easy smile, she reflects the warmth and good humor of someone who was raised on a dairy farm in Minnesota, of Norwegian descent, and who attended a one-room school through the sixth grade. When she was 13, her parents moved to Arizona. I came to California to go to college, met my husband, and the rest is history, she says.
