Through market insight and customer experience analysis David works to dynamically position non-profit brands to increase value and build lasting relationships. He works with social media, direct marketing and interactive communications to align charitable organizations' brand expressions with their missions. David founded Spur Communications in 1994 and lead Spur's pioneering efforts in 1:1 marketing and brand development. Spur provided integrated marketing communications for a wide range of nonprofit organizations including: NNEDV, Camp Fire Boys & Girls, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The Family Conservancy, The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, The Sunderland Foundation, The Francis Family Foundation, and The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. Prior to forming Spur, David was a designer for NewTek Incorporated, the makers of the Video Toaster. A native of Ohio, David was a member of the Industrial Design faculty at The Ohio State University where he taught and conducted research in computer graphics and user interface design. David holds a B.S. in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati, and a M.A. in Industrial Design from The Ohio State University. His design, teaching, and research articles are chronicled in several publications including Print, Innovation, Proceedings of the ACM SIGGRAPH, Arts Advocate, Corporate Identity Design Volume I, and Expressive Typography: Word as Image. In his free time David can be found working as a Boy Scout leader, serving on the Board of Directors of Hope House (the largest domestic violence shelter system in Missouri) or kayaking and scuba diving with his family.

This past week Mosaic compatriot David Svet and I were working on the Pinterest module in the Fundraising with Social Media series.
David and I both work with causes that serve victims of domestic violence, so understanding the dangers of using images to tell a story is something that we recognize as applicable to many causes.
