David was born the 6th child in a family of eight children.
Seven years after their arrival to Mexico, David was born in the city of Monterrey, where the family had driven for better hospital care.
After living there for five years, they moved to San Cristobal, Mexico, where David spent the rest of his childhood and teen years.
David was saved at the age of 8, after Sunday School where his mother was teaching about Abraham and Lot in Spanish. After the morning service, his mother led him to the Lord in his parent's bedroom. The following Sunday, he was baptized in the river by his father.
When David was 11 years old, his family became members of Windsor Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, in order to be sent out as missionaries under Dr. James Vineyard.
At the age of 12, on Mother's Day 1991, David surrendered to be an evangelist in a country church in Duncan, Oklahoma. This was the church that David's father had been saved in. At the age of 17, during David's second semester at Oklahoma Baptist College, David surrendered to missionary-evangelism in the country of Ukraine. Some staff members of Windsor Hills Baptist Church had been to Ukraine on missions trips, and as they shared their testimonies about the trip, they spoke of the great need and great opportunity in this newly-opened country for spreading the Gospel, and David answered the call and surrendered his life to this great task.
David met Jolene for the first time when they were both 14 years old. He began praying for her, not even realizing what kind of home life she was from. When he left Mexico to become a student at Oklahoma Baptist College at the age of 17, he heard Bro.
A year later, David and Jolene began dating under the close supervision of Bro.
On Jolene's 21st birthday, David asked Jolene to marry him, and they began their lives together as husband and wife on June 9, 2000.
Two years later, David and Jolene finished deputation and arrived to the field of Ukraine on August 28, 2002. This was David's first time to step onto Ukrainian soil, but he knew God had called him to this country; therefore, he ventured to make this incredible move with his young bride, three-month old baby, and eight suitcases of their personal belongings.
David and Jolene began language school three days after their arrival to Ukraine. They became actively involved in working with Ukrainians right away. They used every opportunity possible to throw themselves into the culture and place themselves amongst the people. One example is that they chose not to have a car their first nine months in Ukraine. This allowed them to depend on public transportation, just as most Ukrainians do, and gave them opportunities to sit next to Ukrainians on metros, buses, trams, and trolleys.
God has blessed David in allowing him to be involved in many areas of ministry, including soulwinning, preaching on a regular basis, teaching youth and young adults, leading music, directing a choir, as well as directing an annual Youth Conference for Russian-speaking teenagers.
God has placed many burdens and goals on David's heart, and he desires to see Ukrainians learn to win their own people to Christ. One such avenue for training them to do this is through a Bible college that David is in the process of growing, under the authority of the Simferopol Baptist Church, pastored by Missionary Bob Van Sant.

Though I did not know until I was seventeen years old, a young missionary's son, David Sloan, had begun specifically praying for me when I was only fourteen years old. Through the years his prayers became more serious about the possibility of spending his future with me. I had no idea of his interest in me, but he was watching from afar. My junior year of high school, David was a freshman in college. At that time he told Bro.
Bro. Ross likes to say, "Exactly one year to the date, David was in my office again, asking if he could date you! Bro. Ross gave David permission, and a beautiful courtship of four years began.
David came from a Christian home that I never dreamed I could be a part of.
David is the sixth of eight children, all of whom are also serving the Lord.
When David placed the beautiful wedding band on my left hand as a symbol of our everlasting love and commitment to each other, to me no hand looked more beautiful in all of the world. The devil had lost the battle once again!
I had not seen my mother since I was a very small girl. We had invited her to attend our wedding, but she did not attend. I had a great burden for her salvation and had been praying for many years that someone would be able to take the Gospel to her. Little did I know that it would be my very own husband who would show her the way of salvation!
My husband received a call one day from a woman asking to speak with me. He asked, "May I tell Jolene who is calling? "This is her mother," the woman replied. Unbelievingly, I answered the telephone, wondering how it was possible she had obtained our telephone number. She relayed to me the fact that there had been a serious problem with my half-brothers, three boys whom I had heard of, yet never met. Because she had abused them, just as she had abused my sister and I, they had been taken away from her a few years previously and adopted. She had bought a newspaper that morning and noticed a picture of the three of them on the front page. Though their names had been changed, she knew they were her sons. She read the article that followed and learned that her oldest son, age fifteen, had shot and killed his adoptive mother. He had also shot and injured his adoptive father and his own thirteen-year old brother.
David took this opportunity to explain to my mother that I had forgiven her for abusing me for the same reasons that God could forgive a sinner for nailing His Son Jesus on the cross. Several hours after our arrival to the restaurant, my mother bowed her head and asked the Lord to forgive her for her sins! Because I did not allow Satan to cause bitterness in my life, my mother is now on her way to Heaven!
At the time of this writing, February 2008, David and I have served the Lord as missionaries in Ukraine for 5 1/2 years. The Lord has given us two precious sons, David, Jr., and Nathanael, and a beautiful baby girl, Brianna Marie, with whom we have begun our own Christian home.

Our church here was having a special "church in the woods" service at the lake and a baptism that day, so Davey gladly joined in and was baptized in the lake too!
