"By integrating Facebook Chat with your preferred instant messenger, you'll never miss a message when you have to navigate away from Facebook and you'll be in control of how and where you chat with your Facebook friends," said Facebook engineer David Reiss.

In an entry on the company's developer blog, Facebook engineer David Reiss noted that the service handles over two billion messages per day, and touted some of the advantages of using a desktop client:
"By integrating Facebook Chat with your preferred instant messenger, you'll never miss a message when you have to navigate away from Facebook and you'll be in control of how and where you chat with your Facebook friends," he wrote. Reiss also pointed out some additional configuration options the chat service presents. Users can configure which friends appear in the external client by using the Friend Lists configuration tool on the Facebook site. Users can also control whether they appear online for chat by either using "Go Offline" in the chat tool on Facebook's site or by exiting their external chat client. Finally, Reiss said Facebook has connected the new XMPP implementation to its Facebook Connect API, allowing developers to integrate Facebook chat features into their Web sites.
