David V. Plant received the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees all in electrical engineering from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1984, 1985, and 1989, respectively. From 1989 to 1993, he was a Research Engineer with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCLA. He has been a Professor and member of the Photonic Systems Group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McGill University, since 1993. During the 2000-2001 academic year, he took a leave of absence to become the Director of Optical Integration at Accelight Networks, Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Plant currently holds a James McGill Professorship and a Bell Canada/NSERC Industrial Research Chair. He was Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, September 2006-May 2011. He is the Director and Principal Investigator of the Centre pour les systèmes et technologies avancés en communications (SYTACom) and the Scientific Director and Principal Investigator of the Healthcare Support Through Information Technology Enhancements (hSITE) Strategic Research Network. Dr. Plant has received five teaching awards from McGill University, including the Principal's Prize for Teaching Excellence. He received a Postdoctoral Research Associateship from National Research Council, the PMC-Sierra High Speed Networking and Communications Award from the Canadian Microelectronics Corporation, an IEEE Distinguished Lectureship, and the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation. Dr. Plant was the recipient of the R.A. Fessenden Medal and the Outstanding Educator Award, both from IEEE Canada. He was recently awarded a Killam Research Fellowship from The Canada Council for the Arts. Dr. Plant is a member of Sigma Xi, a Fellow of the IEEE, the Optical Society of America, and the Engineering Institute of Canada.

David V. Plant received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1989. From 1989 to 1993, he was a Research Engineer with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCLA. He has been a Professor and Member of the Photonic Systems Group, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada, since 1993, and the Associate Dean Research and Graduate Education since January 1, 2006.
During the 2000 to 2001 academic years, he took a leave of absence from McGill University to become the Director of Optical Integration at Accelight Networks, Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Plant heads both federal and provincial research centres in the Information and Communications Technology sector. Specifically, he is the Director and Principal Investigator of the Centre pour les systèmes et technologies avancés en communications (www.sytacom.mcgill.ca). He is also Scientific Director and Principal Investigator of the Agile All-Photonics Networks Research Network (www.aapn.mcgill.ca). His research interests include optoelectronic-VLSI, analog circuits for communications, electro-optic switching devices, and optical network design including OCDMA, radio-over-fiber, and agile packet switched networks.
Dr. Plant received the Outstanding Departmental Teaching Award and the Faculty of Engineering Teaching Award both in 1996, and the Carrie M. Derick Award for Graduate Research Supervision and Teaching in 2004, all from McGill University. He was named an inaugural James McGill Professor in 2001, an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for 2005/06, and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 2005. He is also a Senior Member of the IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi.

David V. Plant, Scientific Director, AAPN (Ph.D. 1989, Brown University), is a James McGill Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University. He was Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education for the McGill Faculty of Engineering (January-August 2006) and appointed Chair, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering in September 2006. Dr. Plant was elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (2006) "for contributions to the advancement of free-space optical interconnects and enabling optoelectronic-VLSI devices," and received the R.A. Fessenden Medal from IEEE Canada (2006).
Dr. Plant is an expert in optical interconnects for applications in microelectronics systems. His research interests include next-generation optical networks, including high-speed switching technology and tunable laser sources and receivers. In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Plant has also managed corporate R&D as Director of Optical Integration at Accelight Networks
