I had the privilege to travel to Rome, Assisi, Florence and Venice on a pilgrimage with Father David Hemann, pastor at St. Michael Church in Sioux City. The almost 50 pilgrims on the trip were from Sioux City, Fort Dodge, Salix, Anthon, Algona, Wall Lake, Ida Grove, Newell, Lidderdale, Des Moines and Rocky Mountain, Va.

"This is the largest group I have ever taken," said Father Hemann, who was grateful to meet people outside of St. Michael Parish on the trip and bond with people from his parish. "Every pilgrimage you have inconveniences and I found this group to be particularly mature, non-complaining and very flexible."
The priest has always wanted his brothers to visit Italy so he could show them North American College, where he went to school. His brother Tom was able to join us.
Father Hemann or Father John McGuirk, pastor in Wall Lake, Sac City and Early, celebrated Mass for us each day of the trip.
The Pope Mobile drove right in front of where I was sitting with Father Hemann and other pilgrims from my group.
According to Father Hemann, this was very special because not many are given permission to celebrate Mass in this chapel.
The group then walked to the Galleria dell Accedemia where we saw the sculpture of David by Michelangelo and many other sculptures and paintings.
The tour guide, David, led the group through Doge's Palace, the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice.

The invitation to visit Sioux City ... [cached]

The invitation to visit Sioux City came to Talbot via Father David Hemann, pastor of St. Michael Church, who had spent time residing at the Little Portion Hermitage.

"I was first aware of John Michael Talbot in 1976 when I was a member of a Bible-sharing group," Father Hemann said.
Three years later, while studying at Loras College, someone shared a Talbot record with Father Hemann, who was stunned to discover the former fundamentalist was now Catholic.
"Then, some years later I was at a retreat in Steubenville when someone told me John Michael Talbot was looking for a priest for his hermitage," Father Hemann said.
"I assigned Father Hemann to mow some of our 610 acres of land," Talbot recalled.
"People think they know John for his music ministry, but few know professional baseball teams scouted him," Father Hemann said.

Father David Hemann, pastor of St. Michael Church in Sioux City, led the group in song.

"God loved each of us into existence. We praise and thank him for the gift of our life and every other person he has loved into existence. Prior to singing the song, "Sanctuary," he added, "But not only are we a life, but we literally have the life of God dwelling within us."
Father Hemann told those present that with faith, hope and love, they could do all things. Tying into the theme of his song, "Walk on Water," he asked them to keep their eyes on Jesus.
