I had the privilege to travel to Rome, Assisi, Florence and Venice on a pilgrimage with Father David Hemann, pastor at St. Michael Church in Sioux City.
The almost 50 pilgrims on the trip were from Sioux City, Fort Dodge, Salix, Anthon, Algona, Wall Lake, Ida Grove, Newell, Lidderdale, Des Moines and Rocky Mountain, Va.
"This is the largest group I have ever taken," said Father Hemann
, who was grateful to meet people outside of St. Michael Parish
on the trip and bond with people from his
"Every pilgrimage you have inconveniences and I found this group to be particularly mature, non-complaining and very flexible."
The priest has always wanted his
brothers to visit Italy so he
could show them North American College
, where he
went to school.
brother Tom was able to join us.
Father Hemann or Father John McGuirk, pastor in Wall Lake, Sac City and Early, celebrated Mass for us each day of the trip.
The Pope Mobile drove right in front of where I was sitting with Father Hemann
and other pilgrims from my group.
According to Father Hemann
, this was very special because not many are given permission to celebrate Mass in this chapel.
The group then walked to the Galleria dell Accedemia where we saw the sculpture of David
by Michelangelo and many other sculptures and paintings.
The tour guide, David, led the group through Doge's Palace, the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice.
