"I like history and nostalgia," said David Haversat of Oxford, Conn., who purchased the property with his wife, Nicole. "I've really enjoyed it. It's beautiful."
The home and its adjacent barns had fallen on hard times. The property was taken over by a mortgage company last year after the previous owner "walked away," David Haversat said.
The house, which has 2,400 square feet of space and sits on 23 acres, was purchased for $45,000, according to county tax records.
"We were looking for a place with a little bit of land, maybe 15 acres or so," David Haversat said. "In Connecticut, the price of land is prohibitive. We spent three years looking at properties in the [Oppenheim] area, and we met with a real estate agent."
The couple has a 10-month-old son.
"We thought, 'What a great place to raise him,'" Haversat said. "It's peaceful.

"The previous owner made some improvements downstairs," Haversat said. "The people who bought it [before we did] started on the upstairs. I've been working on the kitchen and the bathroom."
Haversat has an agricultural background. He works as a book publisher and is a professional magician. He serves as president of the New England Magic Collectors Association.
