David Jaffer, a Palo Alto-based IP attorney at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, said that in recent months he has spent as much as 50 percent of his time doing patent work for designs relating to clean technology.
In the past year and a half, there has been a "pretty dramatic shift," said Jaffer, whose practice encompasses patent filing and protection. Jaffer and Pillsbury colleague David Jakopin attributes part of the increase to a flurry of alternative energy methods that are being prepared for market. Many of the businesses are startups working with new designs, such a wind turbine technology and electric vehicle charging networks. "Startup companies for the most part believe intellectual property is important to the valuation of their companies," Jaffer said.
