Regarding statements that holes adult fish use have been filled with spawning gravel from the program, physical scientist David Gaeuman noted that sonar was used in a study to see if that was happening.
"The fact is very few holes on the river have filled substantially," he said. Gaeuman responded that the relatively small amount of gravel, about 3,000 cubic yards, is to be part of a structure that is not meant to move. By comparison, he said in a high water year as much as 12,000 cubic yards of gravel washes past naturally.

David Gaeuman
Fluvial Geomorphologist, Technical Modeling and Analysis Group David specializes in fluvial sediment transport and geomorphology. He joined the TRRP in February 2006, following a 2-year appointment as a National Research Council Associate with the US Geological Survey in Columbia, Missouri. David earned a Ph.D. in Watershed Science from Utah State University while developing channel- and habitat-maintenance flows for streams in the Colorado River basin, and a Master's degree from the University of Montana. He has experience with stream rehabilitation and monitoring activities in stream ranging from mountainous headwaters to navigable lowland rivers.
