While some self-reflection can be an important part of your teen becoming an adult, he or she needs to be reminded of the world surrounding him or her. Encourage your teen to give back. Whether it's a family weekend spent in a soup kitchen or a car wash fundraiser, scheduling opportunities to expose your teen to other people can help shift his or her thinking from self to others-and toward being more grateful for what he or she has. Further tailor these interests to your child's interests. If your teen has a strong English background, he or she could tutor others through a literacy program. If your son or daughter likes building things, Habitat for Humanity might be a great place to hone his or her skills.
