Champaign fire Capt. Dave Ferber said firefighters found heavy smoke coming out of a third-floor apartment at 1503 Kiler Dr. when they arrived just after 4 a.m., and they discovered flames when they got inside.
Ferber said one person was inside the apartment at the time of the fire but was able to get out safely before firefighters arrived. No one else was hurt.
Ferber said estimates show $50,000 worth of damage to the structure and $10,000 in damage to the contents of the apartment building.

Around 6 p.m. on Sunday, a pickup truck hit a light pole near the Interstate 57 interchange with Interstate 74, said Champaign fire Capt. Dave Ferber. The truck went into a ditch and caught fire.
Champaign firefighters blocked a lane of traffic as they extinguished the fire. Ferber said the driver was able to get himself out of the vehicle, but there was no information available on whether the driver was seriously injured or if there were passengers in the vehicle.

Some of the damage extended up the siding on the exterior of the building at 1815 W. John St. The damage was valued at $9,000.
It took about an hour to get the fire completely under control, Ferber said.
