David Dinneen, manager of Shoreline Aviation, the company that runs the airport, said the $1.6 million grant will fund the first stage of construction, which will start around Labor Day.
The first phase will clear trees to make room for the wider runway and create new wetlands. Also part of the first-phase plans is the Bass Creek dredging. Dinneen said the airport improvement project, first proposed in 2002, could not be started until the grant money came through. "We are very pleased to receive this grant," Dinneen said Tuesday. "We've been working very hard to prepare the airport and the community for this project. ...This gives us the financial end." The second phase - expansion of the runway and installation of the lighting - will take place next summer, Dinneen said. He expects the airport will receive at least $10 million in additional grants by then.
