The Saratogian - Center could give SPAC a run for its money

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- David Carlucci is living the dream, and then some. The former longtime general manager of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center is about to raise the curtain at a new $70 million venue, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, located at the site of the 1969 Woodstock music festival. The multi-faceted project is the brainchild of Cablevision founder Alan Gerry, and for Carlucci, it represents the pinnacle of 29 years in the industry.Carlucci, 56, was named Bethel's president and executive director in November 2004.Carlucci, who spent 17 years at SPAC, said the two venues aren't competitors, although they're both counting on metropolitan New York to boost event ticket sales.'I sat through all the architectural design meetings,' said Carlucci, who consulted on the project before accepting his current position. 'I had experience managing similar pavilions. An Amsterdam native, Carlucci has a broad range of experiences starting with children's theatre and summer stock productions. At SPAC, he was in charge of day-to-day operations from 1976-92, handling everything from parking issues to box office questions. He also developed and designed SPAC's first Newport Jazz Festival with John Schreiber, who's collaborating with him on Bethel's jazz fest. From SPAC, Carlucci became general manager of House of Blues Concerts Midwest, which handles day-to-day operations of Blossom Music Center, summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra. He was part of a management team that oversaw the Blossom center's $17 million renovation in 2003, and a separate $4.5 million construction project.'That's what really honed my skills to take on this kind of position,' he said. 'This is the most enjoyable job I've had. You're involved with all the little nuts and bolts type things.'Major events will primarily be on weekends, unlike SPAC which presents city ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, rock and pop concerts throughout the week.Carlucci said Bethel will probably never have more than two dozen main events, even after it gets established.Next year, classical or modern dance might be added but for only two or three dates.
