San Domenico School in San Anselmo has sent an e-mail to the parents of students there notifying them that Head of School David Behrs has been terminated.
Glenn Snyder, chairman of San Domenico School's board of directors, issued a statement Friday which said, "We learned from an independent investigation that he (Behrs) had made comments inconsistent with the values of our organization. Behrs was appointed head of school at San Domenico School in May 2010. He was hired following an eight-month national search. Before joining San Domenico School, Behrs was president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana, where he had been president since 2007. Prior to working at Saint Mary-of-the Woods Colege, Behrs served as both the associate provost for University Initiatives and the vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Dominican University of California in San Rafael.

Dr. David G. Behrs
David G. Behrs, Ph.D. Head of School David G. Behrs holds a Ph.D. in counseling and student development from American University, a M.S. in counseling and student personnel from Shippensburg University, and a B.S. in history and social science from Elizabethtown College. (Elizabethtown College recently recognized Dr. Behrs with the Distinguished Alumni Award-Educate for Service for Professional Achievement in 2008.) Dr. Behrs was appointed the Head of School at San Domenico School in the spring of 2010. Appreciating the Dominican tradition of Veritas, Dr. Behrs has led the school this past year through an examination of the mission and vision, emerging with a renewed sense of transformative change. The result of this effort was an enrollment leap by 12% and the development and execution of a strategic planning process that will position San Domenico School as one of the best independent schools in California. Prior to his appointment here in San Anselmo, Dr. Behrs was the 15th president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana. As the first layman to be president of SMWC (since 1840), Dr. Behrs appreciates the importance of traditions, values, and history, but he also understands the challenges of 21st century education. In Dominican fashion, his approach to challenges is to study (mainly through inquiry and consultation), reflect, and then to act with timely firmness. All constituents of the college laud his successes there. Prior to his tenure at SMWC, Dave served as both the associate provost for university initiatives and the vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Dominican University of California in San Rafael. Known as a change agent, colleagues admired Dave for his friendliness, encouragement, engagement with them, and deep knowledge of institutional data from program analyses.

Beginning with our head of school, Dr. David Behrs, our leadership team of division heads and directors has worked closely with our excellent faculty and our supportive parent community to craft a program that has been successful: even with challenges that are inevitable with any transformational change.
