This world premiere production of acclaimed Chicago Playwright David Barr's Black Caesar is an African-American adaptation of the Orson Wells film classic Citizen Kane.
David Barr, III
David Barr, III (Playwright) has been a playwright since his first full length work, The Death of the Black Jesus, was produced in 1986.
In 1999, David was fortunate enough to have two more productions make their world premieres in Chicago. The first, The State of Mississippi vs.
David's most recent Chicago production, The Upper Room, premiered at Pegasus Players and it won the 2005 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Play. He is currently adapting Alex Kotlowitz's award winning novel "There Are No Children Here" (for Pegasus Players) and Charles Johnson's sweeping epic "Middle Passage" (Congo Square Theatre 2008). His next Chicagoland production will be Memphis Soul Stew: The Story of STAX Records (Black Ensemble-Winter 2007)
The JENA Company (New York, New York) produced his Civil Rights docudrama My Soul Is A Witness, where it completed two very successful national tours in 2005 and 2006. David's most recent play with them is another theatrical docudrama titled Jackie, Vi, and Lena and is also produced by the JENA Company.
David worked as a sports journalist/intern for the Daily Press-Virginian Pilot (Newport News, Virginia) during his college years. He also was a feature writer for Chicago's own EM-EBONY Man Magazine from 1996-1998; a Johnson Publishing Company property. He has worked for EBONY Magazine since 1992 and was a consultant on the award-winning 2005 documentary Paper Trail: 100 Years of the Chicago Defender.
André had a wonderful time on the Island of Tobago portraying Jackson Phillip in this season's inaugural show Pantomime and is pleased to once again collaborate with David Barr and Alex Levy in Black Caesar.
Sandra Watson (Kasha Conyers Caesar) is pleased to return and to work with Pegasus Players and David Barr once again.
His last Pegasus production was BLACK CAESAR written by David Barr.

David Barr III is also the author of several published works for the stage including Death Of The Black Jesus, Ev'ry Time I Feel The Spirit, The Face Of Emmett Till (Dramatic Publishing), and Black Caesar (PerformInk).
Mr. Barr has been a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists since 1993, a playwright-in-residence at Chicago Theatre Company, and an artistic associate at Pegasus Players. In 2005 David received Chicago's Joseph Jefferson Citation for Best New Work for his play The Upper Room. He is also a three time recipient of the Illinois Arts Council Fellowship for Playwriting, a two time winner of the National Play Award sponsored by Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City (1995 and 2000), recipient of the 2000 Festival Of Emerging American Theatre (FEAT) National Playwriting Award, winner of the 1998 Theodore Ward Playwriting Award, the 2000 recipient of the Donahue-Tremaine Trust Award for excellence in playwriting, co-winner of the first annual David Ofner Prize (2000) -- sponsored by Goodman Theatre, the 1998 Edgar Award for Best Play from Mystery Writers Of America, and the winner of the 1993 Mixed Blood Versus America National Playwriting Contest.

David Barr III has been working as an actor and writer in Chicago since 1986. As a writer, his plays include The Death of the Black Jesus, which helped him become a recipient of a 1995 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, and was the winner of the 1994 National Play­writing Award, the 1993 Mixed Blood Versus America National Playwriting Contest and the 1997 Black Theatre Alliance Award for Best Original Writing. The play made its Chicago premiere at the Chicago Theatre Company. His adaptation of the Walter Mosley novel A Red Death had its world premiere in 1997 at the Chicago Theatre Com­pany and was the winner of the 1998 Edgar Allan Poe Award. His other work includes Black Caesar (winner of the 1997 Theodore Ward playwriting contest); Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit (winner of the 1999 Unicorn Theatre Na­tional Playwriting Award); a series of monologues for the Chicago Historical Society in conjunction with their Voice From History program; The State of Mississippi vs Em­mett Till, co-written with the late Mamie Till Mobley; a co­adaptation of The Journal of Ordinary Thought (voted as one of the best plays of 1999 by both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times and winner of the Festival of Emerging American Theatre National Playwriting Com­petition); Those Union Station, Pullman Porter Blues; a stage adaptation of the Albert French novel, Billy; and the musical docu-drama Bronzeville. He was the lead writer for the syndicated television talk show Take Two and worked for three years as a feature writer for EM (Ebony Man Magazine). Mr. Barr is a resident playwright and board member at Chicago Dramatists, and the associate artistic director and playwright-in-residence of the Chica­go Theatre Company since 1994. He was named a 2000 re­cipient of the Donahue-Tremaine Trust Award for excellence in playwriting and also received Illinois Arts Council Fellowships in 1999 and 2002.
