Dave Barnes
Dave Barnes was born and raised in Winnipeg, and has lived in Brandon since 1979, moving here to pursue an education degree and start a teaching career. Over the years, his work in connecting young people with the natural world has made him a fixture on the local education scene. Dave has always stressed community building inside and outside of the classroom. The annual environmental projects initiated by his classes have brought hundreds of elementary and high school students together in service to the community and planet. Dave's EcoOdyssey Outdoor School program won the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2000, making him the first Brandon educator to receive this award. Based for many years at Neelin High School, Dave now runs the Eco program out of Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School, where it continues to attract young people and families who desire challenge, enrichment, and personal growth in their education. Dave has always lived his creed, and he invests his time in community volunteerism and service. He was a founding member and first president of the Brandon & Area Environmental Council, and he spearheaded that group's support for the move of Assiniboine Community College to the majestic North Hill campus. He has served on the boards of numerous organizations, including Assiniboine Community College, Brandon Naturalists Society, The Marquis Project, and the Brandon Folk, Music & Art Society. For his significant contributions to the awareness and protection of Manitoba's environment, Dave was given the Manitoba Eco-Network Environmental Award in 2005. Dave Barnes is a motivated and active citizen. You will see him cycling to work year-round, perhaps one day on the grid of cycle trails that he is lobbying the city of Brandon to create. You may see him in animated conversation in French or Spanish, or performing with his Celtic band Fingal's Last Pint, or you may enjoy attending one of his outdoor fund-raising concerts for a local charitable cause. Dave has always been able to recognize an idea whose time has come, and the time is now to reassess our impact on future generations.
