In May 2017, with the imminent closure of the Manus processing centers following a PNG Supreme Court ruling, Nauru's Minister David Adeang said that there was extra capacity at Nauru's processing sites, extending the invitation to PNG's refugees.

The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) approved the membership in November, 2015 and Nauru's finance minister, Mr David Adeang, signed the relevant Articles of Agreement at a press event at the US State Department in Washington, D.C.
This means that Nauru, administered by Australia until independence in 1968, signed up just in time for Minister Adeang to attend this week's 2016 Spring meeting, which runs from today till Sunday in D.C.

Nauru's Foreign Minister David Adeang made the request yesterday after being told mental health workers were gravely concerned about the condition of Muhammad Faisal, who has been on Nauru since 2001. A spokesman for Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone last night confirmed a letter had been received from Mr Adeang and said options were being considered.An official added that "appropriate arrangements" would be made for his continued treatment.
