Taraba resigns from visitors bureau

Taraba resigns from visitors bureau Dave Taraba has resigned as a board member of the Monroe-West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau effective immediately.Taraba turned in his resignation Friday morning at the Ouachita Parish Police Jury office.Jurors appoint the 11 board members."I made up my mind after the last board meeting that I should resign," Taraba said."I've been trying for the last five years to convince people that board appointees should be from the hotel, restaurant and attractions sectors."I'm no longer in that business and I would feel like a hypocrite by staying on the board," he said.Taraba was terminated after eight years as general manager of the Holiday Inn-Holidome. Another deciding factor in Taraba's resignation was a vote taken at the board's last meeting Nov. 20.The board voted that any questions about the 2004 budget should be submitted in writing to the budget committee.Taraba has been critical of the way CVB Executive Director Julia Trichell presents the bureau's $2.2 million budget."They basically voted to do away with any discussion of the budget," Taraba said. After the Nov. 20 meeting, Taraba and board member Martha Upshaw had a verbal confrontation outside the building. The confrontation was reported to District E Juror Kim Golden, because Taraba is an appointee from that district.Golden would not comment on any steps to oust Taraba from the board, but two other jurors reported they had discussed the situation with her and would have voted to terminate Taraba from his board position.Dave is a good man and he had some good ideas, but sometimes he had trouble getting those ideas across to the others. He's a very smart man," Elkin said.Golden also said Taraba "has been a good dissenting voice on the Convention and Visitors Board and we appreciate his years of service."Golden said she hopes that her nominee to replace Taraba will be the same.» Taraba resigns from visitors bureau

Holidome lets Taraba go

www.thenewsstar.com [cached]

Holidome lets Taraba go Monroe-West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau Board member Dave Taraba confirmed Tuesday that he has been dismissed as general manager of the Holiday Inn-Holidome.His last day at Monroe's largest full-service hotel was Friday. His dismissal does not affect his position on the board.CVB Executive Director Julia Trichell said Tuesday that Taraba could remain on the board for the additional 21/2 years of his term as long as he lives in the parish.Taraba, who served four years as president of the Monroe-West Monroe Hotel Association, would not say why he was dismissed."I think the owner felt that it was time to make a change to see if he could get the hotel back moving in the right direction," Taraba said.Taraba and Trichell have had many disagreements, even before former Ouachita Parish Police Juror Tommy McJunkins appointed him to the board 31/2 years ago.Taraba and Trichell first locked horns about five years ago when Trichell got then state Sen.After being appointed to the 11-member board, Taraba and Trichell argued about the Convention and Visitors Bureau's office in West Monroe.Taraba said he wants to find a job locally because he and his wife Jean and their two daughters have enjoyed the area for eight years.Zambie and Taraba are officers of Louisiana Med Camp.Taraba is also a board member of the University of Louisiana at Monroe's Athletic Scholarship Foundation. In its history, it only had 2 general managers----Ed Rutledge and Dave Taraba.Ed passed away recently and now Dave.I do not believe it is appropriate to "broadcast" the "firing" of any individual....it is a private matter and deserves resepect.I realize he was a member of a "public" board, but he and his family should be allowed some privacy.
