Although Publishers Clearing House usually runs a national campaign this time of year, it's the first time the company has promoted the merchandise side of its business instead of the usual spots showing its Prize Patrol team showing up on people's doorsteps, said Dave Sayer, executive director of advertising and public relations for the company.
The company, which was founded in 1953, said its burgeoning merchandise business - which entices consumers to buy such items as household goods, jewelry and videos - now generates more than half of its sales and profit.
"We offer other kinds of merchandise, and it's kind of surprising that a lot of people out there don't realize it," Sayer said."They think we just offer magazine subscriptions, and while it's still an important part of our business, we wanted everyone to be aware of" the merchandise side, he added.
The spots, which were created in- house, all feature the company's Prize Patrol crew, of which Sayer is a member and co-founder.

As longtime head of the PCH Prize Patrol, I’ve heard people say something like the following countless times: “Y’know, my mother always entered the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.  She figured: ‘Somebody has got to win; why not me?’ Well, she passed that winning outlook on to me. So I enter your sweepstakes too â€" every [read more...]

It said they should contact their claims agent, Dave Sayer -- the actual name of one of the real Publishers Clearing House's prize-givers -- at a specific phone number, to claim the $1.5 million prize.
And PCH and its Prize Patrol -- Danielle Lam, Dave Sayer, and Todd Sloane -- never send private messages on Facebook.
Jonsson entered the sweepstakes online ..., 16 Dec 2014 [cached]
Jonsson entered the sweepstakes online and was tracked down by Dave Sayer, of the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol, through an email address.
Sayer said Jonsson's name was drawn at random from thousands of entries from across the United States.
"It is a totally random drawing that people can enter into all over the United States, and whatever number comes up, and whoever it belongs to, is the winner," Sayer said. "When we knock on that door, these people are totally surprised. They have not been informed in any way or any kind of warning."
Sayer said he once had to wait three days for a winner to return home.
Sayer awarded Jonsson a $25,000 check.
Jonsson was the first sweepstakes winner in Shawano County in at least 20 years, said Sayer, who noted the previous winner lived in Bonduel.
As Sayer and the prize patrol moved on to surprise their next winner, Jonsson was counting his blessings.
