Stanton Vineyards - Dave Phinney, Winemaker
Dave Phinney, winemaker As a critic from Groezinger Wine Merchants aptly described, "Doug Stanton, vine guy, and David Phinney, wine guy, appear to have a great thing going here.
Ever since we first introduced you to Doug back in '99, and Dave back in '00, they've been two of our most popular and reliable suppliers of croed pleasing alcoholic beverages.
When it came time to select a new winemaker starting with the 2002 vintage, by resounding recommendations, Doug Stanton looked no further than wine industry "rising star" Dave Phinney of Orin Swift fame.
While an aspiring attorney in college, Phinney traveled to Italy and was so inspired by the vineyards, the wines, and the artistry of the process, that he decided his dream was to be a winemaker instead. Phinney got his start by working harvests at Robert Mondavi and Opus One. To continue his search for knowledge, Phinney went to work at Whitehall Lane where he trained under winemaker Dean Sylvester. Phinney has since honed and applied his unique skills and understanding of how to nurture the most complex, aromatic, and full bodied wines to his own label, Orin Swift, which include such critically acclaimed, cult wines as The Prisoner, Mercury Head, and most recently, Papillon.
As Stanton Vineyards owner attests, "The strength of our wines comes through our vineyard ownership and farming techniques coupled perfectly with the strength of Dave Phinney's winemaking talents."

It's really all about Dave Phinney, owner and winemaker of Orin Swift wines and his series of wines called Locations. Locations includes the I (Italy), F (France), E (Espania), AR (Argentina) and CA (California). He outsources the grapes from around each country, selecting the best of the best.
Dave Phinney's company's name, Orin Swift, came about by taking his father's middle name "Orin" and his mother's maiden name "Swift.
Dave was also the original winemaker of The Prisoner. He sold The Prisoner to Huneeus Vintners/The Prisoner Wine Company. Now, he is the consulting winemaker for The Prisoner and the Blindfold.
2012 Abstract A blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah and Syrah. Using all of the knowledge from creating and mastering The Prisoner, Dave feels the Abstract is their finest blend to date with Orin Swift.
This past Friday evening, Grapenuts featured Dave Phinney's wines.

Dave Phinney, creator of The Prisoner and The Blindfold, has sold these two wines to Huneeus Vintners, which has created Prisoner Wine Company. However, Dave Phinney remains a consulting winemaker on these two brands and the new vintage, while a tad pricier, still delivers the big, bold, slap-you-in-the-face-with-a-freshly-caught-salmon flavors that people have come to love.

Dave Phinney, founder and winemaker
The Prisoner Winemaker Dave Phinney would be the first to say that sometimes the best advice comes from your friends. As a University of Arizona student spending a semester in Florence, Italy, Phinney had a conversation with a fellow student that would set him in the direction of his future.
"My friend grew up in a Sonoma County family involved in the wine industry, and he noticed that I had more than just a passing interest in wine," says Phinney. "I wasn't sure what to do after graduation, so he suggested I try my hand at the wine business."
Phinney agreed, but he couldn't wait the several months until graduation to get started. Energized by this new opportunity he returned to the University of Arizona and helped plant a one-acre experimental block in the heart of Tucson while working for an Agricultural professor. Simultaneously, he immersed himself in wine sales by working at Tucson's finest wine shop.
Armed with these new experiences, and brand new Political Science degree, Phinney landed a job working harvest nightshift at the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley for the harvest of '97.
"I was hooked," he recalls.
