When it comes to their equipment, classic rock musicians know what they need and what they like. And lead guitarist Dave Amato of REO Speedwagon has become a huge fan of the Sensaphonics 3D Active Ambient IEM System he bought a couple years ago.
"My problem with regular in-ears was that I couldn't hear my rig," he explains. "The ambient system lets me dial in that outside world, as much of it as I need. Now I have a full band mix from monitor world, plus I can hear my whole rig, including the effects. It's the perfect thing for guitarists."
When REO Speedwagon decided to move to IEMs several years ago, Amato was far from enthusiastic. "Originally, I fought against it, because I knew I needed to hear my amp," he recalls.
It proved to be the perfect solution for Dave Amato. "At first, I had to have it explained to me, because it really is a different technology from regular in-ears," says Amato. "But when I put them on for the demo, I was like, 'wow, this is amazing.' I knew I had to have them. Now I just wish I had done it sooner."
Another benefit of the 3D system is that, with both earpieces always in place, Amato can listen at a more reasonable volume. "What's cool is that I'm hearing everything I need, and it feels as loud as before, but the dBs are definitely lower," he says. "And my ears don't ring so much anymore, which is really a beautiful thing."
With REO Speedwagon's heavy touring schedule, it's important for Amato to have the right equipment, and the 3D Active Ambient system has become an integral part of his rig.

Interview with Dave Amato of REO Speedwagon
Just got off the phone with REO guitarist and vocalist Dave Amato.
First, what a great guy. The interview was supposed to be about five minutes and it went 30!
Dave's been with REO since 1989 and says he loves life and this is always what he wanted to do.
The best thing is they keep coming back, like we have a whole new following," Amato says.
Dave knows the economy is still hurting people and wants people to know, they're get what they pay for and more. It's money well spent.
"Ten years ago people had the money to see three, four, five shows, now they may have enough to see REO and somebody else, so we know they use their hard earned money and trust me, they will get their monies worth. He continues.
It's been said before, but Dave and the boys want you to forget what ails you while experiencing REO.
"When the audience leaves, I want them to say, man they rocked it, and we're coming back. You're not just an older band, you put out tons of energy and we forgot our problems for a couple of hours, that makes us feel great. Dave says.

August's original lineup included Santoro, "awesome guitar player" Dave Amato who has been a member of REO Speedwagon since 1989 (in fact, Amato has a REO Speedwagon gig alongside Ted Nugent and Styx this weekend in Kansas City, so he's going to be a no-show for "The Bands of Jimmy D'Angelo") and Jamie Pease, who replaced Norris in The Jones.
