Brunson began his career at Independence Community College in 1987 as an assistant men's basketball coach. In 1989 he took the reins of the women's basketball program and at the same time served as the director of athletics from 1991-2001. He also served as the men's and women's basketball academic counselor.
The Wichita, Kan., native received the Army Commendation during the 1990 season after being called to active duty for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
During his playing days (1983-85) at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, Brunson dished out 478 assists, shattering the school record. He also tallied unimpressive 7.5 assists per game. After graduation, Brunson was student assistant for St. Mary's from 1985-87. In 2004, he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame.
Brunson and his wife, Cynthia, have three children, Darius, Deion and Deiona. He also has a son, Darren, Jr. Brunson earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from St. Mary's in 1987. He later earned his master's degree in administration from Pittsburg State in 1998.

Darren Brunson enters his second year on the Miners' coaching staff after coming to UTEP during the spring of 2002.
Since joining the staff, Brunson has been a integral part of the program in the areas of recruiting and on-court coaching.This past off-season, he helped complete one of the top recruiting classes in school history.
Brunson came to UTEP with 13 previous years of experience as a coach, athletic administrator and educator while at Independence Community College.
Over the last decade, Brunson served as the director of athletics at Independence.During that span, Brunson took the Independence athletics department to a higher level with innovative fund-raising campaigns.
Brunson first came to Independence in 1987 as the men's basketball coach.He later took over the women's program and helped rebuild the team into an annual contender for the conference title.
He also took on the assistant director of athletics title during his time as head women's basketball coach.In addition, he was the men's and women's basketball academic counselor.
Following the 1991 season, Brunson was called to active military duty for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield, where he received the Army Commendation Medal and a Certificate of Achievement.
Brunson taught business courses, served as an academic and career counselor, chaired the physical education division and worked as a residence hall director while at Independence.He also worked as an assistant men's basketball coach and assistant athletic director during his tenure.
A native of Wichita, Kan., Brunson is a 1987 graduate of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, with a bachelor's degree in business administration.He later earned his master's in teaching from Pittsburg State in 1998.
While at St. Mary's, Brunson was a standout guard on the basketball team.He then served as a student assistant coach at St. Mary's from 1985 to 1987.
Brunson is married to Cynthia and he has three sons (Darren, Jr., Darius, Deion).
