spent a semester teaching college courses relevant to the needs of the local population in Ecuador. This international teaching fellowship fosters international ties and strengthens higher education in low-income countries.
teaching tenure, Dr. Stokes
became enamored with "Children of the Andes," an ongoing program of Quito-Valle Interoceánico Rotary club
.This project sponsors schools for indigenous street kids in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. The children are provided Rotary uniforms, hot breakfast and lunch, books and teachers during a time when they'd normally be home alone while their parents work in the fields. To support these impoverished children, Dr. Stokes
brought back dozens of items including crafts, jewelry, rugs, scarves, and more from the people of Ecuador so that we could auction these items to raise money for the children.
