Katz will lead a similar class at Harper College in August. • • Darrell Katz is the first to admit he's not an IT wizard. But he does know his way around an iPad. As principal consultant with Impact Training Solutions in Highland Park, Katz has been using his iPad in his management training business since Apple began selling the tablet in 2010. Along the way, he's figured out how to use his iPad in place of his laptop computer as his main business device. And it's that knowledge he'll be bringing to Harper College in August as instructor of two classes in the school's Continuing Education Program: "iPad Essentials" and "iPad as a Business Tool." To Katz, the iPad - as well as all tablets devices - is the next evolution in business computing, which he sees eventually replacing laptops the same way they replaced PCs, and PCs replaced paper and pen. While Apple originally introduced the iPad as a consumer device, "I saw it more as a viable business tool," he said. "I began to think, 'What can I do with this device instead of my laptop?'" he added. "I started to chip away at the things it couldn't do for me and found solutions." Those solutions ranged from creating and running presentations on the iPad to transferring data and printing. His road to discovery eventually led him to grab his iPad instead of his laptop when he worked out of the office. "I used to tell people my laptop hasn't left my office in more than two years, but now I go a step further," Katz said. "When I'm in my office, I have my laptop but it's shoved off to the side. I have my iPad on a stand connected to a keyboard. "It's my main device, even in the office." As his work with the iPad became more visible, Katz said he heard from other users who were frustrated by "roadblocks" that kept them from taking the leap from laptop to iPad. However, he notes, people can find solutions to just about every roadblock. For example, he said, printing documents from an iPad is a roadblock that can be solved. "We're very accustomed to printing and we still live in a paper-based society, and we want hard copies of things," he said, In addition to newer printers being compatible to Apple's Air Print, he said there are a number of apps that can connect the device to specific printers using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth technologies. And, in a pinch, he notes there's the "cheap and dirty" method of laying the iPad face down on a flatbed printer. "People laugh, but it works! he said. Other roadblocks he's encountered are data transfer and document creation, but he adds there a number of solutions available that can serve those issues. For example, Katz notes Apple's Keynote program can allow you to create presentations in a Mac environment, and send them to clients for revisions in a Microsoft PowerPoint format. "That allays people's fear of 'how can I make this a business tool when everyone I work with doesn't have an iPad or work with a Mac,'" he said. The two Harper courses are geared toward different levels of experience, and Katz notes you don't need to take one to take the other. iPad Essentials is focused toward someone who hasn't yet committed to using a tablet. While it goes beyond a basic "how to use it" course, it will get into apps and how it could be used for business, he said. iPad as a Business Tool gets more into the nuts and bolts of using it in business day to day. Katz notes the class will be an interactive one, as he encourages participants to bring their list of their specific roadblocks that can be discussed in class. iPad Essentials will be offered from 6-9:15 p.m. Aug. 1 and Sept. 11, and from 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Nov. 1. iPad as a Business Tool will be offered 6-9:15 p.m. Aug. 8 and Sept. 18, and 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Nov. 15.
