Director & President (Shelter Manager) Darci Hortness, Crooks SD
My (Darci's) mom, Maurine, not a horsey person at all. This is me (Darci) and my niece Jada aboard DoubleHP Spirit. This was his first double ride, so he was a little unsure but was a good boy anyway. Below is me (Darci) getting a great, no-pressure no-resistance back-up from DoubleHP Prince. Below is me (Darci) and Moonshine, one of my great loves. He came before DoubleHP and is the reason I am passionate about DoubleHP. His is a great story. We started learning reining maneuvers together when he was about 15 and I was 40 something. We know nothing about his breeding, but it is something sensational whatever it is! In NRHA, they don't have to be registered. May the best horse win. And he did, over and over again! Don't worry. He is still alive. He is about 26 (Vet's estimate). He is still our pasture boss. Below is me (Darci) on Star, an AQHA mare, who is kind of bred to be a Reiner but is a little too lazy to really be great. What a relaxing trail rider she is though! This picture was in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Anyway, she has won a CPRHA Belt Buckle, some AQHA points, and a wee bit of NRHA money. Below is me (Darci) on Flicka, an AQHA mare. She does not have a drop of "Reining blood" in her, but she tries harder than any other horse I have ever ridden. She too has won a CPRHA Belt Buckle, some NRHA money, and some AQHA points. She is currently serving as Greg's trailriding partner, since his loyal ol' King has had some health issues.

Darci Hortness is the owner and manager of Double HP in Crooks.
With over 30 years of experience in training, natural horsemanship and rescue, Hortness wants to emphasis the ways in which horses can benefit people. After working with law enforcement on rescues for many years, Hortness experienced much grief and heartache, and was ready to put her focus back on enjoying the animals. maycover2 "Horses have a natural ability to find balance and harmony with one another," explained Hortness. "Someone who is hurting can find healing in that ability by experiencing it and discovering ways it can be applied in their own life." With that in mind, Hortness looked toEAGALA for the qualifications she would need. EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association), is the leading international nonprofit group for professionals using equine therapy to address human development and mental health issues. With over 600 EAGALA programs in 50 countries, the belief that horses can positively impact a person's mental health and well-being has rapidly spread. Incorporating specific guidelines and their code of ethics, horse professionals and mental health therapists go through extensive training in order to become EAGALA certified. Hortness earned the qualifications she needed as a horsemanship facilitator through her EAGALA training, but in order to be able to provide equine assisted therapy at Double HP, she would need to collaborate with a licensed mental health professional. Palmberg's proximity to Crooks in nearby Sioux Falls led her to Hortness.
