Dano Hutnik, the eccentric chef and co-owner of Dano's Heuriger on Seneca in Lodi, was named a semi-finalist in the James Beard Awards in the category of best chef in the Northeast.
"I was not expecting a nomination, not in my wildest dream," says the 63-year-old Hutnik
For many years, the Ukrainian-born chef ran Dano's
, a popular fine dining restaurant in Ithaca.
In 2006, he
wife, artist and pastry chef Karen Gilman, opened Dano's Heuriger
on Seneca Lake, which celebrates the casual Austrian food and drink Hutnik grew up with.
also makes and smokes his
own sausage, makes his
own cheeses and recently added a vegetable garden and fruit orchard so he
will have a ready supply of fruit for his

wife, will find out if he's
a finalist on March 19.
The winners will be announced on May 7.
