Danny Rutland Returns to Baptist Health Systems
University News | Mississippi College Mississippi College Danny Rutland Returns to Baptist Health Systems (Sep. 11, 2007) Mississippi College's vice president of advancement, Danny Rutland, is leaving his alma mater after 12 ½ years of effective leadership to return to assume the position of vice president/chief development officer at Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, Inc. in Jackson. Rutland's new duties begin Oct. 1. At Mississippi College, Rutland was among the leaders of the university's $65 million "Growing the Vision" campaign to support scholarships, academic programs and building projects. "Danny has cultivated many important relationships for MC over the years and has helped raise much money for our cause," Royce said. Rutland, a Jackson native, will depart his office in Nelson Hall amid a number of positive indicators for MC, with enrollment climbing steadily, from 3,300 students in 2002 to almost 4,600 students today. "It's a pretty good indication of a strong development program," Rutland said. A 1973 graduate of Hinds Community College with a bachelor's degree from MC in 1975, Rutland served as executive vice president for the trust at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center from 1989 to 1995 before his MC arrival. He also served as regional development director of the Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif. from 1986-89 and was an associate pastor at Highland Baptist Church from 1975-83. A Clinton resident, Rutland is active in the community. He's serving as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Jackson, has served on the board of directors at Hillcrest Christian School in Jackson, and on the board of directors for Youth for Christ. He is often booked for speaking engagements at churches, civic clubs and estate planning seminars. Rutland has served on the board of the Association for Fundraising Professionals. He and his wife, the former Melesia Williams, are the parents of two daughters, Mandy and Meredith. He is also the proud grandfather of Hunter Horton, son of Mandy and her husband Justin Horton. "I truly believe that what I do is ministry," Rutland said. "I feel that, in my own way, I make a significant impact on the lives of people. I firmly believe that, through our office and the work and commitment of our staff, we are making a difference in the direction and destiny of Mississippi College." Rutland oversees fund-raising activities at the main campus in Clinton and the School of Law in Jackson plus he helps with oversight of the public relations department as well as the alumni office. He reported to work with a can-do attitude that was infectious to his colleagues. Integrity is a big part of his makeup. "Integrity is everything," he said. Rutland really won't be getting very far away. He promises to remain a Choctaws fan at MC athletic contests and attend other events at the institution. Founded in 1826, Mississippi's oldest college is home to more than 450 employees and an annual budget of about $50 million. At Baptist Health Systems, Rutland will soon rejoin an organization that served as Jackson's first hospital.

We are pleased to announce Danny R. Rutland has returned to Baptist Health Systems as Vice President and Chief Development Officer.
Danny originally joined Baptist in 1989 and established the department we currently call the Baptist Health Foundation. Fundraising and charitable giving were never a major emphasis at Baptist until Danny launched the program. We wish Jim the best in his retirement and look forward to many years of successful fundraising with Danny. During the 12 years between his employment at Baptist Health Systems, Danny served as the Vice President of Advancement/Alumni Affairs at Mississippi College where he was involved with two successful major campaigns. One campaign surpassed its goal of $80 million, and the other was well on its way to its $65,000 goal when Danny left to join Baptist. He is married to the former Melesia Williams, and they have two daughters and one grandson.
