MHS alumni who performed at the Gala (l to r): Michael Keenan, Tommy Sam, Adam Douglas, Marching Rebel Band Director Keith Breeden, Bethany Ellis, Ben Martin, and Danny Ray Martin. The next performers were Danny Ray Martin and Dr. Josh Smith. Martin is a 1991 MHS graduate and Bethel College alum. He also received a Master's from Berklee College of Music in Boston. As a senior, he was a captain of the MHS drumline, which won the 1990 state drum championship. He has been a performer, session musician, composer, arranger, transcriber, film scorer, editor, consultant, teacher, school director, clinician, and a video director and technician. He performs with various groups, including his own trio, quartet, quintet, and big band. He was called "West Tennessee's answer to John Scofield" by The Commercial Appeal. Martin is currently an assistant professor at Bethel University, where he designed the guitar curriculum. He founded the East Nashville School of Music, was a finalist for a Nashville Emerging Leaders Award, and is active in church and volunteer work. Before the performance, Martin revealed a drum stick he used during the championship performance in 1990, saying he "never walked these halls without one.

Guitar, Improvisation (All Instruments), Guitar for Songwriters Danny Ray Martin, a McKenzie, Tennessee native, has been called "West Tennessee's answer to John Scofield" (The Commercial Appeal 2005). After completing post-graduate work at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, Martin went on to study privately with the late Shawn Lane. Martin is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at Bethel University in McKenzie, TN, Director of the East Nashville School of Music, and leader of The Danny Ray Martin Quartet. He teaches Guitar (all levels and styles) as well as Improvisation and Guitar for Songwriters.
