WILSONVILLE - Recently retired U of O Professor Daniel Close, PhD has been named one of this year's recipients of the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award, which recognizes a small number of leading scholars each year in the fields of medicine, law, and psychology who have inspired their former students to make a difference in the community.
U of O alumna and Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care President & CEO Gina Nikkel nominated Dr. Close for his part in inspiring her to pursue a PhD in social public policy, leading to her pioneering work at the helm of the world's only international community foundation dedicated solely to improving outcomes for people experiencing mental health challenges.

Dr. Close met then-Chair Gina Nikkel in the course of her work leading the Tillamook Board of County Commissioners and advocating for services to children and families. He paved the way for the busy single mom to fit the time and cost of her PhD studies into an already challenging work load.
