Dane Nichols, of Washington, DC and Watch Hill, Rhode Island, is well known for her leadership in a number of conservation and education organizations. Nichols served as a director of The Natural Step, an organization founded in Sweden to teach and support environmental systems thinking in corporations, cities, government, unions, and academic institutions through an easily understood dialogue process rooted in fundamental science. She co-founded the U.S. office and served as Chair from 1998 to 2002. An active member of the board of Island Press-Center for Resource Economics, Nichols has just completed her term as vice chair of this nonprofit publishing house for environmental information. An active member of Rachel's Network, an organization that promotes the involvement of women philanthropists in conservation and conservation fundraising, Nichols has been a founder and supporter of many forward-thinking educational, humanitarian and environmental causes. She spent 15 years overseas, stationed with her family in the Foreign Service in Brazil, Belgium, Havana, Cuba and Paraguay, and speaks Portuguese, French and Spanish. Nichols is currently serving as vice chair of the Environmental Film Festival of Washington, DC.
