Dan Winters, Sailing Master
has been sailing competitively for 44 years and has been associated with sailing industry for nearly the same period of time.
A professional sailmaker for the last 33 years, he
is also experienced in yacht design and rating rules.
has won races in more than 13 one-design classes and innumerable cruising designs.
has sailed numerous offshore races, won two Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing High Point Championships (CBYRA), two Virginia Cruise Cups, two MORC Fleet Championships, three CCV High Points, and hundreds of individual races on the Chesapeake Bay and Florida.
Dan has been the Commodore of two yacht clubs, was the CBYRA Region IV Vice President in 1980, the Region IV Scheduler for 11 years and has conducted dozens of race committee management seminars and rules seminars.
He served on the Florida Sailing Association Appeals Committee and has been the Chairman of the CBYRA Rules and Appeals Committee - South since 1983.
He regularly serves as a judge for collegiate and scholastic championships.
Dan became coach of the CNU Intercollegiate Sailing Team in 1991.
In 2003 he
was inducted into the InterCollegiate Sailing Association's
Hall of Fame as the winner of the 2002-2003 Outstanding Service - Professional Award.

Neil Pryde Agent, Dan Winters, Inducted into ICSA Hall of Fame
Dan Winters, the Neil Pryde Agent for the Southern Chesapeake, has been named the winner of the 2003 Outstanding Service Award/Professional by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association and has been inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame, located at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Dan Winters (Emory & Henry College `62), professional sailmaker, has coached the Christopher Newport University sailing team since 1991.
has significantly raised the performance level of the CNU
team and has done a great deal to support high school sailing in the local area.
was instrumental in formation of several high school teams in Virginia.
has offered advice and assistance to other new and upcoming clubs and teams in the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association
(MAISA) and has entertained many of those teams at the CNU facility for practice.
Winters was named Chair of the ICSA Development Committee in 1996.
has undertaken extensive research aimed at identifying the issues critical to team development and growth of the ICSA

As a sailmaker, he
has worked closely with coaches at a number of ICSA
colleges to develop and refine sails for collegiate use.
Winters has frequently served as a judge for both ICSA and Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association championships.
As a certified judge, he has conducted numerous race management and rules seminars, and he is the long-serving Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Rules and Appeals Committee-South.

Sailmakers, concerning sails for the restored Chesapeake Bay skipjack, the Claud W. Somers , we were more than casually interested.
Working closely with Dan
and Brett, we handcrafted a sail plan that included the non-contemporary items such as mast hoops on the mainsail, lazy jacks and a half clubfoot on the jib.
and Brett provided excellent measurements of the boat and rig and together we brought all the parameters together to build an excellent set of sails.

Skye Kussmann (Stonington, Conn.) was recognized with the James Rousmaniere Award for student leadership; Daniel Winters
(Hampton, Va.) was honored with the Lifetime Service Award; Michael O'Connor (Foxboro, Mass.) was awarded the Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service by a college sailing professional; and Sheryl B. "Sherri" Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) was awarded Outstanding Service by a volunteer.

Recognizing a career of extraordinary service to College Sailing
, as a volunteer or professional, Dan Winters
has been involved with college sailing for over 22 years.
He became the coach at Christopher Newport University in 1991 and was previously inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame in 2003 when he was honored with the Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service.
Winters fell in love with sailboats as a kid and started racing as a natural progression in the sport.
says as a coach of the Christopher Newport Sailing Team he
discovered that it was far more satisfying when one of his
kids won than when he
won himself, "They are happy to have won and I am happy that they have won.
That's double the fun," he
Winters has been a critical person in the Mid-Atlantic college sailing conference working as its scheduler.
offers help and advice to new teams in the conference and he
has gone out of his
way to be sure that smaller clubs receive the attention they deserve.
As chair of the ICSA Development Committee, Winters has helped college sailing outside of the Mid-Atlantic conference and worked to identify issues critical to team development and growing the sport as a whole.
Although Winters will retire from coaching next fall, he will continue to promote and contribute to college sailing through coaching, as a race official and working as the Mid-Atlantic conference scheduler.
