Neil Pryde Agent, Dan Winters, Inducted into ICSA Hall of Fame
Dan Winters, the Neil Pryde Agent for the Southern Chesapeake, has been named the winner of the 2003 Outstanding Service Award/Professional by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association and has been inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame, located at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Dan Winters (Emory & Henry College `62), professional sailmaker, has coached the Christopher Newport University sailing team since 1991. He has significantly raised the performance level of the CNU team and has done a great deal to support high school sailing in the local area. He was instrumental in formation of several high school teams in Virginia. He has offered advice and assistance to other new and upcoming clubs and teams in the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) and has entertained many of those teams at the CNU facility for practice.
Winters was named Chair of the ICSA Development Committee in 1996. He has undertaken extensive research aimed at identifying the issues critical to team development and growth of the ICSA. He undertook the production and distribution of the ICSA promotional video, "Sails Across the Campus. As a sailmaker, he has worked closely with coaches at a number of ICSA colleges to develop and refine sails for collegiate use.
Winters has frequently served as a judge for both ICSA and Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association championships. As a certified judge, he has conducted numerous race management and rules seminars, and he is the long-serving Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Rules and Appeals Committee-South.
An accomplished sailor in his own right, Dan Winters has always worked to promote sailing to colleges, high schools, and the wider world.

Dan and Brett provided excellent measurements of the boat and rig and together we brought all the parameters together to build an excellent set of sails.

Lifetime Service - Daniel Winters Recognizing a career of extraordinary service to College Sailing, as a volunteer or professional, Dan Winters has been involved with college sailing for over 22 years. He became the coach at Christopher Newport University in 1991 and was previously inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame in 2003 when he was honored with the Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service.
Winters fell in love with sailboats as a kid and started racing as a natural progression in the sport. He says as a coach of the Christopher Newport Sailing Team he discovered that it was far more satisfying when one of his kids won than when he won himself, "They are happy to have won and I am happy that they have won. That's double the fun," he says.
Winters has been a critical person in the Mid-Atlantic college sailing conference working as its scheduler. He offers help and advice to new teams in the conference and he has gone out of his way to be sure that smaller clubs receive the attention they deserve.
As chair of the ICSA Development Committee, Winters has helped college sailing outside of the Mid-Atlantic conference and worked to identify issues critical to team development and growing the sport as a whole.
Although Winters will retire from coaching next fall, he will continue to promote and contribute to college sailing through coaching, as a race official and working as the Mid-Atlantic conference scheduler.
