According to Retail Card Forum, shoppers using prepaid gift cards and certificates are more likely to pay full price in retail stores than shoppers using other media, according to recent research by Daniel R. Horne, assistant professor of marketing at Providence College, RI. Horne's survey found that 40% of shoppers that used a retailer's gift card purchased items at full price, compared to only 16% of shoppers who used other payment methods.

Professor Dan Horne, an associate marketing professor at Providence College, says warehouse clubs selling multi-packs offer low-level discounts in the five per cent range.
"But if you're buying a lot of gift cards, five per cent can really add up," he says. Horne strongly advises consumers always check the scratch-off pad on the back of a gift card to ensure it's intact before attempting to buy or use it. "There were some scams years ago where people would look at the numbers and wait for the card to be activated and basically steal all the money," he says.
